Gavin Newsom proposes new Department of Cannabis Control

The Governor of California is recommending a major overhaul to how the state regulates the cannabis industry. Industry leaders are applauding the proposals.

“This next year is going to be very critical in seeing how quickly we can course correct and how quickly we can start to see the impacts of these changes,” said Josh Drayton, spokesman for the Sacramento-based California Cannabis Industry Association. “We have to see who survives.”

Newsom’s new budget calls for collapsing three state departments into one, the new Department of Cannabis Control by July 2021. It also calls for collection of taxes directly from retailers rather than distributors.

Newsom is budgeting for a 15% increase to marijana tax revenue up to $550 million in the 2020-21 year.
